A grainy background.

Creativity should last a lifetime

Sep 16, 2025

This is a letter to inspire you.

To remind you that, no matter what, creativity will always matter.

Because making things isn’t just something you do, it is a part of who you are.

For all of us.

Putting new things out into the world is a cornerstone of the human experience.

It always has been, and it always will be.

Now, more than ever, it is all too easy to get bogged down in the details, the data, and the outcomes attached to our creative pursuits.

And while all of these things have their place, none of them come at the expense of creativity itself.

Because what you make is what matters most.

People exist to create things.

You exist to create things.

Even when you don’t feel like it.

Even when you feel uninspired.

Even when you’re afraid.

I saw this image recently, and it reminded me of how important creativity is:

A quote from Dead Poets Society

Yes, businesses are important (I run one).

And yes, money matters (we all need it).

But when you sit down to think about what truly moves the human spirit forward, it is art, music, the written word.

These are the things that capture ideas and spread them from generation to generation.

We live in a brief moment of time where the amount of creative work being put into the world has grown exponentially due to the democratization of our tools.

This is a good thing.

But it doesn’t change the fundamental reason for creating things, to put something out into the world: because we need to.

Humans are creation machines.

It’s what we do.

To not make things isn’t even possible.

You make things every day, even if it’s not “art”.

You write texts and emails.

You cook dinner.

You get your hair cut to change your image.

You work out to change your body.

You speak to those around you to create new thoughts, opinions, and beliefs.

We are, all of us, constantly creating the world around us, even if we don’t realize it.

Now, I will concede this is a bit of a rant, but I believe we could all use a reminder from time to time that encourages us not to give up.

Because giving up isn’t really an option.

If you stop making music, you’ll make something else.

If you stop making videos, you’ll make something else.

You will create the world around you either intentionally or unintentionally.

So why not choose to be intentional?

None of us can control every outcome in our lives.

But we can most definitely control our inputs.

How we spend our time.

What we want to put into the world.

What we choose to work on.

So choose what makes you happy.

Choose to make things you’re proud of.

And choose not to let the details get you down.

Keep going.

Keep creating.

Keep using your gifts to make the world a better place.
