How to Begin Building an Audience Online

Sep 13, 2022

Building an audience on the internet is not easy. It takes work, dedication, persistence, and a lot of trial and error to get it right.

But cultivating an audience online is the single greatest unlock to living the life you want.

If you can attract an audience of like-minded individuals by consistently delivering value they trust, you will be free to create what you want, put it out into the world, and earn a living from your work.

Just get started

The beginning of anything is always the most challenging part–a new workout routine, overhauling your diet, waking up earlier.

Building an audience is no different. When I started sharing my ideas online, no one paid attention to what I was doing.

If you’ve ever posted a single thing on the internet, you know exactly what I’m talking about.

Unfortunately, the only way out of this early-stage hell is through the fire–you have to keep going. It takes time for your ideas to grow, mature, and proliferate.

When we first start posting content to Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, or whatever our platform of choice is, our thinking (and the ability to express it) is generally clunky and unrefined. We have to work to discover what it is that we really want to share, and we have to figure out how to express it clearly.

But the most important thing is this: it doesn’t matter where you start, only that you start. You can always adjust course later.

Putting in the reps

The key to this stage of cultivating your audience is repetition. The beginning is all about building habits that produce results.

In short, we want quantity over quality.

Steph Curry is one of the greatest shooters of all time in the game of basketball. He ends every practice with the requirement that he make 5 swishes out of 10 from the free throw line.

As a result, he is a career 90.8 percent free throw shooter.

90.8 percent!

The only way this kind of consistency happens is by showing up every day for an extended period of time (I guarantee you he wasn’t a ninetieth-percentile shooter when he first picked up a basketball).

Creating content and building an audience online is no different. It takes consistency for an extended period of time to refine those muscles that eventually begin to produce results.

If you show up every day, you will build those muscles and those habits.

The most important part of this stage is this: avoid burnout and don’t quit.

Refining your path

Once you’ve been creating content for a time, you’ll finally start to see a little traction. It may take months, it may take years, but if you keep showing up, it will happen.

For me, it took about 18 months of consistently posting to YouTube before people finally started paying attention to what I had to say.

And then the magic began–people started asking questions.

Once you’ve gained the attention of a few, pay attention to what they want because they will tell you. And when they tell you, do your best to deliver for them.

Three years ago, I never would have considered a career in marketing, but the people asked, and I listened. Now I run a full-fledged marketing business with solutions for my audience at every level.

From here, it’s just a matter of scale.

But it all started with showing up every day when no one was paying attention.

If you have the grit to keep showing up, you will win.
