How to build a business by solving your own problems

The world is full of problems.

Big ones. Small ones.

If you want to build a business that actually lasts, solving problems is the smartest place to start.

And if you want an edge over the competition, start by solving your own.

Because odds are, if something is frustrating you, thousands of others are experiencing the exact same thing.

Value is defined by utility

We’d all like to believe that what we make, say, or do has inherent value just because we put energy into it.

Rarely is that the case.

Value only exists when you fill an actual want or need—it’s the foundation of commerce.

Sure, there’s plenty of funny money floating around right now pulling in cheap attention for valueless quick fixes, but as soon as the tide goes out, it’s easy to see who’s been swimming naked.

And nobody wants to see that.

Chasing trends might give you a temporary high, but real stability and longevity come from the fundamentals.

If your work doesn't change lives, it won't survive.

The helix of problem-solving

Solving problems isn’t a flat circle—it’s an ascending helix.

It’s about layers, not completion.

For every pain point you eliminate, new ones naturally spring up as a result.

This isn't a source of frustration for the enterprising operator. It’s fuel.

Building something that stands the test of time comes from solving the right problems, not just any problems. You could spend your whole life fixing friction that never needed to be fixed and end up with nothing to show for it.

The easiest shortcut to finding the right problems is to scratch your own itch.

Find something that bugs you. Figure out how to make it better. Share that process publicly on YouTube, Instagram, or elsewhere. Listen to the feedback people give you, cross-reference it with your own emerging pain points, rinse, and repeat.

That’s the whole game.

Proof through practice

I spent 15 years as a touring musician before pivoting completely into entrepreneurship.

In that time, I had to solve the immediate problem of making a full-time living in one of the most brutal industries on the planet.

When I got married and had kids, my priorities shifted. I wanted to be home. So, I figured out how to run paid ads to promote my own work and started sharing my results online.

People immediately came out of the woodwork needing help with the exact same thing.

Over time, solving that single problem expanded into mastering customer acquisition at scale. Now, I’m stepping into the next season, building software tools to address new operational bottlenecks—bottlenecks I never would have discovered if I hadn't spent four years running an ad agency first.

And it all started with solving my own problems.

Solving problems is what makes you valuable.

It’s how you earn your freedom, establish real brand equity, and build something you actually enjoy.

And believe me, it’s a game worth playing.
