How to build trust with your audience online

Mar 5, 2026

Building a creative business is a balance between two sides of the same coin.

On the one hand, you have to earn attention.

And on the other, you need to build authority.

Because anyone can generate views or go viral with a gimmick, but getting someone to open their wallet requires more than just social proof.

It takes trust.

If you want to move people from search to sale, you have to bridge the gap between interest and intention.

Whether you're in music, merchandise, software, or sales, your audience has to know they can trust you with their money.

And that is no small thing.

Lead with transparency and empathy

The foundation of trust is understanding.

If you want your audience to believe you can solve their problems, you must first prove that you actually understand what those problems are in the first place.

Most creators try to position themselves as untouchable experts and gurus, even if unknowingly.

They show their highlight reel and hide their scars.

That’s because it somehow feels safer to have all the answers than to admit you don’t have it all figured out.

(Spoiler alert: none of us has it all figured out)

The uncomfortable truth is that real authority is found at the intersection of expertise and humility.

So don't just share your wins.

Share your "vibe coding" disasters.

Share your unfinished songs.

Share your failed ad campaigns

When you show people what didn’t go right, you stop being a profile picture and start being a contemporary.

So become a constant student of your craft.

Learn in public, evolve your process, and share the transformation.

Because people don't buy products—they buy a better version of themselves.

Show them you’re on that journey too.

Leverage the power of video

Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing how we write, code, create, and communicate, democratizing the ability to build and sell at scale.

But while AI is a powerful tool for workshopping ideas, it has created a massive premium on being an actual human.

Most people haven’t figured this out yet.

And when it comes to building people-centric reputational equity, nothing beats video.

Video allows your audience to experience your cadence, your tone, and your personality.

It creates a sense of familiarity that text simply cannot replicate.

For example, when a client hops on a call with me, they often feel like they already know me because they've spent hours "with" me on YouTube

This familiarity skips the awkward introductions and builds an immediate bridge of trust that AI simply cannot replicate.

So, more often than not, the "selling" is already done, and the call simply serves as a touchpoint to get to know one another.

They aren't hiring a stranger, they are simply formalizing a relationship with someone they already know and trust.

Practice radical honesty in public

The internet is full of inflated numbers and people faking it until they make it.

However, those hollow vanity metrics are a short-term strategy that, ultimately, leads to long-term failure.

Because the moment a customer interacts with your product, gets on a discovery call, or comes to your show, they will see through the fluff.

If your marketing is a lie, your business is a house of cards.

Honesty isn’t just a moral choice—it is a competitive advantage.

Be fully transparent about your capabilities and your limitations.

Share the process behind the product, the "grind" that happens when the novelty wears off.

If a project fails, own it.

If a song flops, embrace it and learn from the silence.

Ultimately, people want to do business with people, they want to buy from people, and they want to support artists who are actual people.

By showing up as your true self—flaws and all—you build a brand that is resilient, respected, and prepared to scale.

And that’s how you win.
