Real artists have something AI can never replace

Mar 19, 2026

I was recently on a call with an artist hovering around 100,000 average monthly listeners on Spotify.

If you do a bit of rough math (and assume an average of three streams per listener), that’s about $1,000 a month in royalties.

That puts this artist in the 97th percentile of creators on Spotify.

On the surface, that’s pretty impressive, but in the real world, you and I both know $12,000 a year doesn't pay the bills.

Unfortunately, the gap between "internet famous" and "financially free" is wider than most realize.

That’s because building a sustainable music business requires moving past the play button on your favorite streaming platform and onto something more.

Here is how the ones who are winning bridge the gap.

The merchandise machine

The biggest stars on the planet don't rely solely on fractions of a penny to earn a living.

They run product businesses.

For the modern artist, merchandise isn't something that’s just "nice to have”—it is a primary driver of revenue, stability, and freedom.

You don’t just have 100,000 listeners, you have a dataset of potential customers.

The transition from artist to entrepreneur happens when you stop asking for attention and start offering value in return.

Merchandise is a powerful way to do this.

Inside our agency, we consistently see returns on ad spend between 2:1 and 4:1 for merch campaigns, and in some instances, with the right set of incentives and timing, we’re exceeding 10:1.

That means for every $1 spent on Meta ads, the artist makes $2, $4, or even $10 back.

This isn't magic; it's marketing

By leveraging a solid social following and a bulletproof ad strategy, a "small" artist can generate a full-time income.

Stop waiting for the algorithm to save you.

Build a storefront instead.

The power of the show

Suno can generate a melody, but it can’t sweat on a stage.

You can do both.

AI can’t look a fan in the eye or give someone a hug at the merch table.

You can do both.

In a world increasingly dominated by digital replicas, the demand for authentic human connection is only going up, and the live performance remains the ultimate proof of work.

If you can kill it live, you have the makings of a career that no software can disrupt.

I spent fifteen years on the road, and I can tell you: the musicians who go the furthest are usually the ones who are the most prolific performers.

Anyone can hide behind the keyboard (AI included), but the stage doesn’t lie.

If you’re good, this is your point of leverage.

Playing shows isn't just about the music—it's about building momentum.

You don't need a viral hit to sell out a venue.

You need a reputation for excellence and the discipline to show up when it matters most.

Great songs get people through the door, but a powerful live experience will turn casual listeners into lifelong fans.

This is where your mindset shifts from seeking fame to delivering transformation.

Putting it all together

The most effective strategy is the simplest: stack your strengths.

Sell merchandise at your shows.

When someone catches a show and then meets the artist at the merch table, the value of that interaction is immeasurable.

It moves the artist from a digital thumbnail to a real human being and takes the relationship from theoretical to actual.

Personal, in-person interactions build the kind of brand equity that survives platform changes and algorithmic shifts.

Don't ignore the vanity metrics—Spotify and Instagram are useful tools for discovery.

But don't lose sight of the forest for the trees.

You are building a business, and businesses are built on relationships.

By combining physical products with meaningful experiences, you can create a sustainable ecosystem around your art.

This is how you turn your hobby into your calling.

This is how you build a business from your music.
