A grainy background.

Why most ads fail before they even run

Ads don't just create demand.

They amplify what already exists.

Most people run ad spend backwards—buying attention before they've earned any, then wondering why it doesn't convert.

Advertising doesn't start fires.

It pours fuel on those already burning.

The spark still has to come first.

The problem with buying attention

You can build an entire ecosystem with ads.

It's possible.

It even works, often.

But only when the core value of the creator—and their content—is already clearly defined.

If you don't know how to make things people actually enjoy, ads won't save you.

They might even expose you faster.

And it's easy to delude ourselves—the numbers go up, we throw a few more dollars in, and it feels like progress.

But skip the work of learning to make something people want, and you never build the muscle that creates anything that lasts.

You're doomed before you start.

Advertising as fuel

The best advertising strategy amplifies what's already working.

I've helped run over a quarter billion ad impressions for other people, and I can tell you that the accounts with real follower counts—10K, 100K, 1M—are always where ads work best.

Because the demand already exists.

The creator already knows their audience, and already knows how to talk to them.

Turn ads on for someone like that and the jump is immediate—volume, engagement, followers, sales, all at once.

Because we're not fabricating a message from scratch. We're just putting the one that already works in front of more people.

No one knows your audience—what they want, what you offer—better than you do.

Fuel works best when there's already a fire.

Putting it all together

I know both sides of this equation because I've lived both.

When I first tried to get people to listen to my music on Spotify, I did it all: content, ads, even pitching to playlists (hard pass on that last one).

My content fell flat. My ads did well. Playlisting was, well, playlisting.

The problem was the paid-for numbers hid the real issue—I still hadn't figured out how to write a song people actually wanted to hear.

And that process took longer because of it, longer than it otherwise would have if I'd just eaten glass and solved the real problem first.

Contrast that with YouTube, where I went almost entirely organic (a couple weeks of ads at the beginning, then nothing).

Hundreds of terrible videos later, I finally figured out how to make things people wanted.

And I built a business from it.

The first path taught me plenty and ended fine, but the second built something that lasted, taught me a real skill, and changed my life.

Ultimately, the decision to run ads is yours. No one else can tell you when it's time.

Just don't let the itch for bigger numbers stop you from learning how to create the value that actually drives those numbers in the first place.
